Self Storage Tips
- To determine the size you need, see our Self Storage Size Estimator.
 - Disassemble furniture before storing. Keep pieces together and mark them. Put any screws or hardware in a ziplock bag and tape it to the furniture to which it belongs. (Remember to use tape that is safe on furniture, or tape it to an inconspicuous place!)
 - Store large pieces of furniture vertically to save space when possible.
 - Protect the legs of furniture with bubble wrap or something similar.
 - Use “dead space” such as inside drawers and larger appliances to store smaller items, accessories, or hardware.
 - Use boxes rather than bags to store items. Invest in sturdy, reliable boxes of similar sizes that can be easily stacked.
 - When packing boxes, wrap each item separately and fill any unused space with newspaper or something similar.
 - Clearly mark all boxes. Make sure to note “fragile” on boxes with breakables.
 - Defrost any refrigerators or freezers before putting them in storage.
 - Drain any fluids from equipment such as lawnmowers or blowers before storing.
 - Drain washing machines before storing them.
 - If you are storing photographs, or similar keepsakes, invest in a facility with climate control.
 - Do not store anything perishable, flammable, or combustible.
